Full disclosure This review is by one of HvS's sons. "Patsy and the Pup" is a fictionalized story of the author's daughter Elisabeth and her dog Trusty, who actually arrived as a birthday present in a pail in about 1950, when we were living in Montreal. Mom loved drawing Trusty and Lis and figured out a way to work up the illustrations into a sweet story. As Alfred Hitchcock might have said (and he was working in Canada on a possible children's movie at that time), the pup is the "McGuffin" in the story. Patsy finds him and wants to keep him. Can she? Will she? This book is for pre-teen children who like animals. The language is simple, the pictures full of interesting details.
Really good book for little ones, with lovely illustrations. I love classic stories like this. Delightful artist and author.
Darling story, darling simple artwork. Simple but entertaining. We are fans of Hilda van Stockum, and while this is not maybe her finest work, we enjoyed it.
